For Zanshin, I recommend three excercises.
1. This makes you aware of the oponant: As often as convenient, watch half an hour of television without any volume. Just watch, do not stare or strain your eyes. You will start to be aware of the little manurisms that we generally block out (eg. fiddling with an ear ring or a facial twitch).
2. This develops your peripheral vision: Sit comfortably and look upon a single point. Maybe a spot on the wall in your bedroom or a pole by the side of the road. Without taking your eyes off that spot, explore your environment. At what point do you first notice the car, what colour is it? Which book is on the floor of your bedroom.
3. Before leaving the house, decide upon which feature you will look out for (different ones on different days). Maybe today you will keep an eye open for dogs, or red cars. or pink shirts. Become aware of your environment.
