This is a continuation of my Sith Tarot series. For the previous cards please go to the Sith Tarot section.
The second Major Arcana card is a feminine card. It is God's feminine side, or in certain cultures, a goddess. The card is called Priestess or High Priestess or even Papess (female Pope) in some decks.
The Priestess is aloof and otherworldly in nature. She is detached and objective. She is not involved personally in all the soap operas and passions of the earth, sort of a "Mrs. Spock." The Priestess is connected to the non-human side of the Force. This can make her a rather spooky figure.
Some decks show her semi-veiled and having a book of secrets on her lap, secrets no ordinary human can comprehend. She knows the deep truths not evident to ordinary people.
She has a keen understanding of both the Light and the Dark Side of the Force. Some decks show her sitting between two pillars. One pillar symbolizes the Light Side and the other the Dark Side. She is a balance of the two, hence the fact that it is the number two card of the deck. Unlike the Jedis of Episode 2, she could see just as easily into the Dark Side as the Light. If she was Jedi, she would be the one to tell them to leave the temple because danger was sure to come. She would also say things they would not want to hear as regards their failings. Hers is the raw and undiplomatic truth.
The Priestess could just as easily be seen as a Sith. She is not the warm or sympathetic sort or understanding of human fears, desires, and sentiments. She could easily find Palpatine's plan for the galaxy orderly and logical. She certainly shares Palpatine's secretive nature, the side that mulls and plots and hears the mysterious voice of the Force. Like him, she could say the words, "I have forseen it."
The Priestess could also be neither Jedi nor Sith. In the Star Wars world, I could easily imagine her living in a castle on top of a mountain in the Hoth System. She could be a Force-Follower who senses deeper into the Force than any other. In times of confusion or desperation, both Sith and Jedi come to consult her as an oracle, an oracle who is neutral and detached from the conflicts in the galaxy.
The Priestess is seen as an unmarried woman. This is part of her aloof nature. She does not procreate because to procreate means to get involved in the world.
So what does this mean if you get this card in a reading? It could mean that vague idea that has been bumping around in your head that has not become clear yet. Perhaps it is a story not yet written or that vague impression in the mind of an artist who has not yet put it on canvas.
Perhaps it is telling you to find some calm corner away from the hubub to think things over. Perhaps it is urging you to stand back and take an objective view. Maybe you have jury duty soon? Perhaps you need to do more still meditation. Or...perhaps it means to look at the hidden influences in any situation. Sniff around.
What would the negative meaning be? Perhaps you or someone you know is as cold as ice, too cold.
