This card fits well in the Star Wars films. Palpatine represents all that this card is about, in both the positive and negative meaning. The only area the Star Wars movies fail to define is the role of the Empress, who is a necessary part of the Emporer. This oversight can be left to the world of fan fiction !
This card represents all that is Sith. The Sith desire to have power and to rule, in whatever endeavor they set their minds to. Sith will stop at nothing to achieve their dream. This is the nature of this card. There is not much that is Jedi about this card.
Most decks show a king on some kind of throne. Often he holds a scepter in one hand and a globe or orb in the other. The scepter is a symbol of male energies, and the globe is a symbol of female energies. Some decks show him holding lightning bolts like the lightning bolts of the Greek God Zeus who used lightning to scare humans. It is an interesting fact that Sith lightning has old mythic origins. Lightning was considered divine power, especially divine masculine energy. Lightning can either be destructive or life-giving depending on how it is used.
Some decks give a background of stark bare mountains. This is to symbolize the sterile world of power and regulation, much like the blacks and greys of the interior of the Death Star. Palpatine's taste in decor reflects this general look.
The Emperor is a planner and a builder. THe number 4 represents this since buildings usually have four corners. He brings order out of chaos. He is intelligent, logical, methodical, and plotsome. He has a large goal and plans step by step how to get there. He is all about rulership, power, and authority. He can master and manipulate materiality, even its most unsavory aspects.
The Emperor is God's/Force's masculine part, whereas the Empress is the feminine. The Empress is his divine consort. Together they can create worlds. The worlds and those in them are their "children."
In the Tarot, the Emporer can be seen as good or evil. He could use his power to preserve or to be destructive and vicious. In the Star Wars films, one can see Palpatine as either good or bad. This would depend on your point of view.
On the positive side, the Emporer is a builder, innovator, leader, and bringer of law and order. He can deal with the nitty gritty of the material plane because he has the power to do it. This is where his consort the Empress influences things. He has the logic and reason. She has the feelings and intuition. He needs her so as not to be too cold and rigid. She needs him to balance her overflowing emotions.
On the negative side, the Emperor can be stubborn, arrogant, reckless, and overly harsh. This side of the Emperor came out in Episode 6 Return of the Jedi when he flipped out over Luke's refusal to join him. Often rulers rise and fall. Earthly power has its season, and those who wield it can become ???y and foolish.
So what if you get this card in a reading? It could mean it is time to build your empire and plan it step by step whether it is conquering a galaxy or doing some personal goal. Follow your drives and desires. Plot. Persist. Kick some rearends! Take charge. Use the energies of anger to motivate.
Or...it could be a warning that you are being too overbearing and stubborn, too angry about something that did not go the way you wanted. Is there too much egotism, recklessness, ruthlessness, or overwork? Or perhaps another person is dominating you, and you need to use your lightsaber?
It is definately a hint from the Dark Side if you get this card! ;D
