This card usually depicts a couple, either embracing or marrying. Yes, its most obvious meaning is that union between a man and a woman; yet it has other meanings as well. It is also an aspect of the Force, the part of the Force that makes birds nest and flowers bloom in spring. It is Aphrodite or Eros. It is that desire for union with a soulmate, the force of attraction.
This force of attraction is risky, as Anakin found out in the first trilogy. In fact, the whole story is about his attraction. Was this attraction of his of the Dark Side? In a way, things turn to ruin all because of a very natural thing. One can wonder what the Jedis' problem was with a thing that the Force itself incourages in living beings.
There is always a risk factor in making one's choice of who to have union with. One can make a mistake. So this card represents the idea of choice and risk as well. Personally, I questioned the union of Padme and Anakin because their points of view were so different. Would they have had trouble in peace time even if the Jedi alowed it? Would it have worked, or would they have argued all the time and ended up divorced? One can speculate. (I have a friend who thinks she would have been a better marital choice for Anakin .)
If one is lucky enough to choose well and find the perfect someone, there is magic that can be done that could not be done before. There is a power in oneness, whether it is Siths or Jedis. That is because ultimately the Force itself is a union, a union of various polarities.
The Lovers card stands for a union of polarities, whether a couple or as applied to any pairs of opposites. "Live with ambiguity, contradiction, and paradox. Embrace the opposites and maintain the center." James Wanless, VOYAGER TAROT: WAY OF THE GREAT ORACLE.
What does it mean if you get this card in a reading? The obvious is anything to do with your significant other or a future significant other and all the risks, choices, and potential bliss and power involved.
It could be about a choice that has to be made, your other loves in life. Do you follow your heart or your wallet for example? In Episode 1, Anakin had to choose whether he wanted to be a Jedi or stay at home on Tatooine. Choices can mean that to choose one thing, you have to let go of another. What do you love most?
It could also be about that which is opposite and how two opposites relate to one another. For example, Sith and Jedi are on opposite sides of the Force. Perhaps it means to go try the other side's message board (or section). Maybe it means to look at the other path and see how the two paths mysteriously fit together.
The negative meaning would be hostility between parties, feuds and divorce. The two sides are too far apart and cannot unite on anything. It is just hissing lightsabers and dismembered combatants.
Hopefully not.
Maybe when you get this card, Siths should marry a Jedi and Jedis marry a Sith. Wouldn't that be interesting?
