This is the card people associate with luck, luck which always changes for good or for ill. The card usually has the image of a wheel which turns, a wheel of fortune. It often has figures of people, some rich and having good luck, some falling or as beggars having bad luck. The card reminds someone of that T.V. game show Wheel of Fortune where the contestants spin this large wheel and guess letters of a phrase.
Luck or fortune is a concept of great debate. Some believe it is just raw chance. Others believe it is governed by some God or karma.
The wheel is a common symbol to refer to time and cycles. The zodiac is a wheel. The Buddhists have a wheel to represent life on earth as do other cultures.
Traditionally it is associated with a goddess. Goddesses are usually associated with nature, with earth, and with the passage of time and seasons. Goddesses are often dual. They can be nurturant and motherly, or they can be devourerers and destroyers. Typically, goddesses are approached when one wants to know the future. It is a common theme in mythology where the hero consults some female oracle. In Lord of the Rings, Frodo is shown reflections of the future by Galadrial. This is why some in the gambling world call her "Lady Luck."
Old Ben Kenobi said there was no such thing as luck. In the Star Wars universe, this card would represent the will of the Force which was behind all the seeming coincidences in the movie. The will of the Force caused Qui-Gon Jinn to find the slave boy Anakin on Tatooine. This led eventually to the demise of the Jedi, the rise of the Sith, and the rebirth of the Jedi through Anakin's son Luke.
In the Star War's world there were times when a Force-sensitive could see things in advance before they happened. Qui-Gon called it a Jedi trait. There were other times when they could not see and referred to the future as "clouded." The Jedi had trouble seeing into the Dark Side of the Force. Palpatine could see clearly into the Dark Side, like an owl into the night. This gave him the advantage. Since a Sith, according to Palpatine, uses both sides of the Force, they would have an advantage. The Force is very much like the ancient goddesses with their dual natures of nurturant and destructive. If anyone feels that fortune telling is their calling, they will need to be comfortable with all aspects of the Force, both Light and Dark.
The wheel refers to the passage of time and the cycles of nature and history. Historians study patterns in history that always seem to repeat, especially the rise and fall of empires. If one understands and observes these patterns in detail, one can predict the likely future of any nation or any economy. These people are consulted when one wants to know what stock to invest in or what political move to make. This is where objectivity helps. So often, political prejudice causes blindness to what would otherwise be obvious. This is where it is best to look at all points of view objectively both "left wing" and "right wing."
This is what your local weatherman does. He sees patterns and conditions using satellite and other technology to tell you when the cold fronts are coming or the hurricanes are brewing.
All these forecasters, whether they be historians, weathermen, or Force-sensitives, are observing the Law of Cause and Effect. On the wheel of fortune, cause and effect is what turns it. The Indians call it karma. The Bible calls it sowing and reaping.
"There is an appointed time for everything. And there is a time for every event under heaven-
A time to give birth and a time to die;
A time to plant and a time to uproot what is planted.
A time to kill and a time to heal;
A time to tear down and a time to build up.
A time to weep and a time to laugh;
A time to mourn and a time to dance.
A time to throw stones and a time to gather stones;
A time to embrace and a time to shun embracing.
A time to search and a time to give up as lost;
A time to keep and a time to throw away.
A time to tear apart and a time to sew together;
A time to be silent and a time to speak.
A time to love and a time to hate;
A time for war and a time for peace."
Ecclesiastes 3: 1-8 New American Standard Bible
If you get this card in a reading, it is about what destiny has for you, good or bad. If you sowed good seed, a good harvest should be coming your way. You will get lucky.
It may be telling you to assess odds and probabilities and to see patterns. Stand back and objectively assess. Be like Palpatine, seeing and exploiting every possibility.
It may be a reminder that all things are temporary. The wheel of time turns and things change. Even the rich and powerful eventually fall. No one stays on top forever.
Time is always on the Force's side. No power on the material plane can last forever. Things are always shifting, but the Force is eternal. It will still be there long after empires and institutions have crumbled.
Getting this card in a reading may also be telling you to take a gamble on something. Go for it! Fulfill your destiny. Follow your passions. Number 10 is perfection and completion, so go complete it! A negative interpretation would be that you are taking a foolish gamble or that you have delusions of grandeur.
For a Sith to get this card, it could mean that destiny is flowing with you as you plot your "empire." This card says, "The Force is with you."
This particular card, Fortune, brings up the whole issue of the use of Tarot cards in the first place. The main reason people even use Tarot cards is because they want to know what will happen. So how do Tarot cards actually work? Each card symbolizes some energy or concept that happens in the universe. They pick up on these energies. This happens through the one who is handling the cards. The one that seems hot or charged as you select it while the deck is spread out face down, is the answer to the question. It is your Force-sensitivity that feels the right card. The Force somehow subtly guides the choosing. Tarot cards are a Force-sensing aid.
A less mystical explanation would be that Tarot cards trigger the unconscious mind. The mind will gravitate to an image on the card. The image triggers the unconscious. It brings a submerged thought out into the open. Oftentimes we unconsciously know our own future. It is our conscious selves that do not see. In this way, even a stone atheist can use the cards. One just has to believe in human psychology. The cards are like a psychiatrist in a box or bag, available to call on anytime day or night. Certainly the fee is cheaper.
The James Wanless deck is the best one for triggering the unconscious because each card is rich with images. This deck has more images to trigger the mind than most others.
Wanless believes the use of the cards alters the future. "Fortelling the future is never certain. Future projections are only that-projections. Reading the future is assessing odds and probabilities. Once the probable future has been forseen through the cards, it has already begun to change. The consciousness of the viewer of the future naturally alters the future. In physics this is called the 'Heisenberg Principle'- to get close to and to see an object is to change it through our own energy." p. 103, VOYAGER TAROT: WAY OF THE GREAT ORACLE by James Wanless, PhD
