"Powerful Jedi was he...powerful..." -Yoda
The 11th card in the Major Arcana of the Tarot is Strength, and it often shows either a man or a woman subduing a lion. The archtype is that of Sampson or Heracles or their female equivalent. (Some decks have this card as number eight.) Since the gender of the strong person varies from deck to deck, it seems that the gender factor is not as relevant to this card. Strength can be either. It is also not just about physical strength but about inner strength as well.
This card represents our animal self, which would be our dark side. A Jedi would think in terms of taming this animal side. A Sith would think of the best way to tap into this power.
There is always a struggle between one's instinctual drives and desires and the conscious mind. It is "the crazy aunt in the basement." Do we bar the door? Do we bind and gag her, or do we just give her a leash? A Sith would want their conscious side in control, but this wild side would get a longer leash.
The Sith gives this side an outlet. The Sith harnesses the power of their inner beast. Which is best, to forever lock the horse in the stall, or to ride it and benefit from its strength?
This is a good time to study the lion as a totem, or any big cat. The lion is a symbol of might, passion, natural power, and courage. This card encourages a person to get in touch with their feline side. A lion is a big cat. Cats are strong and sensitive, and they see in the dark. Have you ever seen the glowing eyes of a cat who is out on the prowl in the night? The eyes can be yellow, green or orange, much like the glowing eyes of a Sith lord. Sith see into the Dark. It is their home, and a Sith is as comfortable in the Dark as any cat on the prowl. Like a cat, you may have to wait for your moment, but then you pounce!
What if you get this card in a reading? It may be saying to take a walk on the wild side. "Me Tarzan; you Jane!" (or...Me Jane; you Tarzan!). Have strong ideas and an iron will. Bust through the dense and the dull. Express strong feelings and passion. Get up the nerve. Ask for that promotion. Confront the troublemaker. Ask him/her out for a date. Try out for the team. Challenge the opponent. Assert yourself. Establish your territory and your individuality. Strut your stuff. Have no doubts. Be Palpatine and take over. Be Darth Maul and knock the stuffing out of whoever challenges. Be Anakin and strive to be "the most powerful..."
The card may be saying that you lack power in some area and need to cultivate it. Go and do what you need to do to build up your power. Perhaps it means to get off the couch and exercize. Perhaps it means to position yourself in a more advantageous spot. Stop whatever prevents you from having power whether it be a habit, lifestyle, or a difficult person in your life.
Perhaps it is telling you to acknowledge your desires, even your dark ones. Do you have lust or rage? Face your dark side. Make it a friend and ally. Find a legal outlet. If you tend to get into fights either at school or work and want to slug those %$@# people, perhaps you should find an outlet in some sort of combat sport. If you are burning with lust, find that significant other. If you feel threatened in some situation, see if you can somehow leave it. (Or, if you can't, try to find some way to not go nuts). Many of our impulses are rooted in millions of years of evolution. Our impulse to fight or flight goes back to when we were on all fours. It is hardwired into our genes so it cannot be ignored or denied. Better to channel it than allow the impulse to lead you to do something dumb.
What would a negative meaning of this card be? It could refer to a person who is overly bull-headed and stubborn or a person who abuses his/her power by abusing those under them (dictator disease/ mini-fuehrer complex). It could refer to a person who is too overly materialistic and non-spiritual or exploitative, selfish, vain or bossy. It could be one who overindulges in physical pleasures. A Sith must know the difference between having power and being coccy.
