The Light Side
The Dark Side
The Grey Side
Water
Elements
All of these are some of the titles that are given to the Force. The Light Side Jedi, The Dark Side Sith. I am here, now, going to challenge these ideas, and, I hope, something will come up.
Why do we separate the Force into three main parts: The Light Side, the Dark Side, and the Grey Side? For me, it is mainly because the human psyche cannot accept it otherwise.
Who can say that, when he/she was little, he was never afraid of the darkness? And that the light brought some relief? Here is the turning point of why we call these "sides" so.
The light is, to our shaped minds, what reveals everything. We cannot see in the darkness, therefore we could say it is a lie. The light brought relief to our monsters of darkness, and that, we could say, was our first truly formed concept of Good.
We have also defined Darkness now; Darkness is that which keeps hidden, which is the opposite of light (and therefore of Good) and we equate it (as it keeps everything hidden and isolated) with solitude.
The elements and Grey are more or less the same, with grey being what we could call the afternoon or the morning (notice how each word alters the meaning of Grey!!!). The elements are just another way of conveying (for humans) different powers and, may I say it, characters and abilities.
In conclusion, we humans say the Force is light, dark, watery or firey because of one simple reason: We cannot percieve it in any other way. The way our morals, our fears and our pleasures are made up throughout our lives defines the Force for us.
If we didn't fear the darkness, and we feared the light instead (as a community, that is), I am pretty sure we would be calling the Dark Side the Light Side. Confusing ain't it?
As Vallen put it when I told him about this lesson:
If you take away the definition of the Force, and leave it as one whole, humankind will still use it in Dark Manners and Light Manners.
The Force is not colored.
The conduit of the Force is tinted, and that cannot be denied.
