One can and should use the dark side powers if it is necessary to ensure the survival of others or oneself. Contrary to Yoda's teaching, the truth is that sometimes Jedi need to use their powers to attack if they wish to defend the innocent.
Master Windu was the strongest fighter of the entire Jedi Order and he use a certain Lightsaber Form called Vaapad or Ferocity Form which used darkside powers in its execution. However, he used it with wisdom.
And so, I would say that only the most disciplined Force-Sensitive can use the darkside to aid the Light. Sora Bulq's and Depa Billaba are a testament to this truth.
Anakin Skywalker decided to use the darkside for good, but it consumed him and he was unable to control its influence over him. Therefore it is control which must be sought by the practitioner.
In the old times, before Jedi, there were schools of Force-Sensitivity. Small schools dedicated to the Force, similar to Taoists, Buddhists, Shintoists, Ysanna, Aiing-tii monks, the Krath, and the Sorcerers of Tund.
Many of these also add Martial Art to their abilities, though the Shinto-Priest didnt need to fight since they were so strong in the force, and clever, that no power of darkness could harm them.
If you really want to get down to the basics of Jedi Religion, what you have to do here is become a Force-Sensitive person.
The study of both Light and Dark are necessary: "Know thyself, and Know thine enemy." This is the control that anakin lacked. He was very powerful in the Force but lacked the suficient knowledge. Do not yourselves make the same mistake.
In order to become Force-Sensitive, what do you do? It's simple, feel the force through meditation. Sit in a dark place, close your eyes, relax, watch the breathing with your mind, allow yourself no inner dialogue, and wait for the visions to come. The key is relaxation because to Sense the Force requires a state of mind which is perfectly balanced between waking and sleeping.
People make it more difficult than it is.
Peace,
