People often wonder how to deal with two emotions that frequently force many people to act irrationally or otherwise behave as they wouldn't. The key to becoming a Jedi is to learn how to act, not react, and not let every emotional impulse dictate how you behave. Once you are no longer being guided by the "drunken monkey" of your emotions, you can act more decisively and correctly--and also have a peace of mind that comes from knowing that your emotions do not rule you, you rule your emotions.
There is no emotion, there is peace.
THAT is the key to the Jedi code! Not to squash or no longer have emotions or passions, but to not let them dictate your life. Emotions are often transient and fickle, and hence cannot be relied upon to make clear decisions.
In these decisions, we can learn more about the entirety of any given situation that we wouldn't have been able to do under normal circumstances, ie. our emotions getting the better of us and our judgments and actions becoming clouded by them. In that learning we gain knowledge, precious knowledge to us as Jedi.
There is no ignorance; there is knowledge.
That knowledge can ultimately help you to sharpen your Will and allow you to work through your goals effectively without either grasping at them or becoming obsessed with them. Passions themselves are not bad; it is when they consume us and our thoughts, words, and deeds that we become ruled by them. In the light of not letting our emotions rule us and the knowledge we gain from that, we can achieve a sense of serenity knowing that we do not need to grasp, our goals are within reach given faith in the Force. This is because we have grown closer to the source that helps to guide our actions in the highest and best way.
There is no passion; there is serenity.
In learning how to be who you are and not let either your emotions or passions dictate you, you work towards making yourself into a clear and perfect channel of the Force. This state will allow you to be in the most touch with it and hence have the most positive benefit that one can derive from being one with the Force. Ultimately if one perfects this state, they realize that in being truly one with the Force--along with everyone else--they will not and cannot ever truly die.
There is no death; there is the Force.
When the mind and heart have both been mastered, one realizes that the real them is underneath all of the transient day to day clutter, and that real self is both ageless and deathless.
