In my own experience, the period of greatest gain in knowledge and experience is the most difficult period in one's life. ...Through a difficult period, you can learn, you can develop inner strength, determination, and courage to face the problem. Who gives you this chance? Your enemy.
-His Holiness the Dalai Lama
Obstacles in life can be thought of in the same fashion--not just people.

yes, and sometimes your greatest enemy is yourself. Personally I think of trials not just as learning experiences but also as a trial by fire (so to speak) in which our character is proven.

Oh gods yes--and more often than not. Often we project that enemy onto others because the outward nature of dealing with people is sometimes easier than dealing with ourselves.
People are our mirrors.
