Winter not only brings with it cold, bitter winds and nasty colds and flu, but it also brings dry, chapped skin as well as other general skin problems. So just how do you cope? What products should you use and how can you prevent these problems from occurring?
Beating Those Winter Skin Blues!
Luckily there are a number of things which you can do in order to beat those winter skin blues. Whilst Eczema and winters itch may be a constantly threatening problem, there are ways to tackle them and to prevent them from occurring in the first place. Some of these things include:
Using a Humidifier
A Humidifier comes in really handy in winter as with the windows tightly closed and the heating turned up to full blast, the skin often feels the negative effects. Really hot, dry air can cause the skin to become dry and dull so by using a humidifier it helps to circulate the air and it places moisture into the air too.
Luckily a good humidifier does not have to cost the earth and you should be able to find one to suit your budget from your local high street store. If not you can always find hundreds of them online.
Cut Down On Those Long, Hot Baths
As tempting as it may be, having a really hot bath tends to wipe out all of the skins natural moisture and it leaves it extremely dry. Ideally the water should be luke-warm every time you bathe, though if you do insist on having a hot bath, try and cut them down to two to three times a week rather than every day!
There are some natural bath recipes you can create which help to keep your skin looking smooth and moisturized. One of these recipes includes using oats and dry milk powder. All you do is mix equal amounts of both the dry milk powder and the oats, and then place them in a jar. Then each bath you have use ½ a cup of the mixture and you will find that the starch which is within the oats really helps to keep the skin smooth. The milk powder on the other hand contains lactic acid which smoothes away any dry, dull skin which you may have.
Moisturize Regularly!
Moisturizing in the winter months is one of the best things you can do for your skin, though always make sure that the moisturizer is the right type for your skin. If you do use the wrong one, it can often make your skin look even worse than what it already does now.
After a bath or a shower you should always put moisturizer on within fifteen minutes of getting out. It is also best to apply the moisturizer whilst your body is still slightly damp. The best way to do this is to towel dry your body and pat it dry rather than rubbing it as that can damage the skin. It is always better to apply moisturizer at least twice a day and ideally you should apply it throughout the day instead of just in the morning and at night. This helps to give your skin the best possible chance of re-hydrating itself.
Overall winter can be troublesome to the skin but as long as you moisturize, avoid extremely hot baths and if you keep your home as moisturized as possible, you should get through winter with no real problems.
